Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics Degrees in the UAE: Pure Science Programmes, Research & Funding (2026)

Updated · 9 min read · By the UAE College team

Most conversations about studying in the UAE focus on business, medicine, engineering and computing. Pure science, meaning physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics, gets far less attention, yet it underpins the country's research ambitions in space, energy, materials, health and artificial intelligence. If you enjoy understanding why things work rather than only building them, these degrees deserve a place on your shortlist.

This guide explains what a pure science degree involves, how it differs from an engineering degree, which UAE institutions to look at, how research and funding work, what entry requirements to expect and what graduates do next. It is written for prospective undergraduates and master's applicants, including international students comparing the UAE with the UK, India, Canada and the United States.

Programme availability, scholarships and deadlines change often, so use this article to build a shortlist and then verify details on each university's website. You can browse institutions on the UAE College explore page.

Why pure science is worth a second look

The UAE's higher education sector has grown rapidly. Gulf Business reported in September 2026, citing the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, that enrolment passed 218,000 in the 2025-2026 academic year, with newly admitted students up 15 per cent. The system now includes about 103 institutions and 2,500 programmes. A small number of those programmes are in the basic sciences, which means smaller classes and closer contact with faculty than in the largest business or engineering cohorts.

Science also connects to national priorities. The country runs a space programme, invests in advanced materials and energy research, and funds university research directly: Abu Dhabi's media office, for example, has reported that UAE University funded 132 research projects. Undergraduates sometimes take part in such work through summer research programmes. One example reported for 2026 was a Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre research programme for undergraduates in STEM fields, hosted at universities including NYU Abu Dhabi, which ran from June to August.

Be clear-eyed about the trade-off. A pure science degree rarely leads directly to a single named job in the way nursing or civil engineering does. It leads to many options, but you usually need to add skills, such as programming, a master's degree or a PhD, to turn the degree into a career. Many students find that this flexibility is exactly the point.

Pure science versus engineering: choosing between them

Both fields begin with the same mathematics and physics, but they diverge in purpose.

  • Physics explores fundamental laws, from quantum behaviour to astrophysics. It leads to research, data-heavy jobs, optics, electronics and teaching.
  • Chemistry studies matter and its transformations. It leads to pharmaceuticals, materials, petrochemicals, environmental testing and forensic work.
  • Mathematics and statistics build the tools used everywhere else, and lead to data science, finance, actuarial work, cryptography and research.
  • Engineering applies those principles to design and build systems. If you want a licensed professional title, engineering is usually the more direct route; see our engineering colleges in the UAE guide.

What you study

Bachelor's degrees generally run three to four years. The first year typically covers calculus, general physics and chemistry, and laboratory skills. Later years specialise.

Physics

Expect classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, condensed matter, computational methods and a laboratory sequence. Some programmes offer concentrations such as astrophysics, medical physics or materials.

Chemistry

Core areas are organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, plus instrumental analysis and a research project. Accreditation by an international chemistry society can matter for careers abroad; one example is that UAE University has said its chemistry programme has been accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry, though that comes from an older publication and you should check the current status.

Mathematics and statistics

Typical subjects include real and complex analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, probability, statistics and numerical methods. Pairing these with programming makes graduates particularly attractive to employers in data and finance.

Universities to shortlist

The list below is a starting point, not a ranking or a complete directory. For comparative data see our UAE university rankings guide, and for the main categories of institution see types of universities in the UAE.

Research-focused universities

United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain has a College of Science with physics, chemistry and mathematics departments, and offers bachelor's, master's and PhD study. Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi is a research-intensive institution; it offers postgraduate funding in mathematics and science and has published scholarship opportunities that range from partial to full funding depending on merit and research potential. NYU Abu Dhabi is a highly selective research university with science programmes; check its admissions page for how applications and financial support work.

Other universities with science and mathematics options

The American University of Sharjah and the University of Sharjah both run science programmes alongside engineering, and Zayed University offers science and sustainability-related degrees. The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence is postgraduate and focused on AI, which is a good destination for mathematics graduates. Check each university's current programme list because offerings change.

Applied alternatives

If you prefer practical, lab-based training, the Higher Colleges of Technology run applied programmes in science and technology fields that can lead to employment or to further study. These are not identical to a research-oriented BSc, so ask about progression routes.

Research, scholarships and funding

Funding is one of the strongest reasons to consider science in the UAE, especially at postgraduate level. Some institutions use fully or partly funded scholarships to attract research students. Aggregator websites reported that Khalifa University offered scholarships for bachelor's, master's and PhD study for Fall 2026 with an application deadline in March 2026, and that a PhD in Mathematics scholarship in 2024 included a monthly stipend, but those figures come from third-party listings and may be out of date. Always rely on the university's own admissions and scholarship pages for current amounts, eligibility and deadlines.

Undergraduates can look for summer research programmes, faculty-supervised projects and capstone research. Ask each department how many undergraduates publish or present at conferences, whether paid research assistant roles exist and how supervisors are assigned. If you are an Indian applicant planning around budget, compare totals in rupees using our colleges under 20 lakh INR and under 25 lakh INR pages. For dirham budgets, see colleges under AED 50,000 and affordable universities in the UAE.

Entry requirements

Science degrees expect strong secondary-school results in the relevant subjects. For physics, mathematics is essential and physics is usually required; for chemistry, chemistry and mathematics or biology; for mathematics, strong mathematics results, often including advanced or further mathematics where offered. Indian applicants typically need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Grade 12, and applicants from British and IB systems usually need relevant A-level or higher-level subjects.

English proficiency, commonly IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 or an equivalent, is normally required. Some universities historically used EmSAT for placement, so check the current position with our EmSAT checker. The Ministry has said that recent admission policy changes give institutions more flexibility in setting entry requirements for individual programmes, so published criteria can differ between programmes. Selective institutions may add interviews, essays or additional tests.

For master's and PhD programmes, expect a relevant bachelor's degree with a strong grade, English proficiency, references and a research statement. International students should plan for certificate attestation and the process in our student visa guide.

Costs to expect

Costs vary more in this field than in most, because funding policies differ. Some research-oriented universities fund a significant share of students, while private universities charge standard tuition. Public universities primarily serve UAE nationals, so many international students will be looking at private or selective institutions. Check each college's fee page on UAE College for tuition, and use the cost calculator to add housing and living costs. Because funding can change the picture entirely, apply to scholarships at the same time as admission rather than afterwards.

Careers and next steps after a science degree

Graduates branch in several directions. Some go straight into jobs, some into master's degrees and some into doctoral research.

  • Research scientist or laboratory technician: in universities, government labs and industry.
  • Data scientist or analyst: mathematics and physics graduates with programming skills are common hires.
  • Quantitative analyst or actuary: requires strong mathematics, statistics and usually professional exams.
  • Energy, materials and petrochemical roles: particularly for chemistry and physics graduates.
  • Quality control, environmental testing and forensic science: laboratory-based careers in chemistry.
  • Medical physics and healthcare science: often needs postgraduate training and clinical placement.
  • Teaching and academia: school teaching usually needs a teaching qualification, and academia needs a PhD.
  • Space and aerospace support roles: see our guide to robotics, automation and mechatronics degrees for an adjacent technology field.

Skills that improve employability

Learn Python or another language for data analysis, build a small portfolio of lab or computational projects, pursue an internship, and take at least one summer research placement. Employers outside academia value people who can explain technical work clearly, so practise writing and presenting.

Where in the UAE should you study?

Abu Dhabi has the strongest research ecosystem, with Khalifa University, NYU Abu Dhabi and government research entities. Al Ain, home to UAEU, offers a campus-focused student life at lower living costs than the big cities. Sharjah has two large universities with science options and lower rents than Dubai. Browse by emirate: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai.

A checklist for choosing your programme

  • Confirm the university and programme are licensed and accredited, using our CAA-accredited universities page as a starting point.
  • Ask which laboratories and equipment undergraduates actually use.
  • Check how many faculty are active researchers in your area of interest.
  • Ask about undergraduate research, paid assistant roles and summer programmes.
  • Find out where recent graduates went: jobs, master's degrees or PhDs.
  • Check for international accreditation in chemistry, physics or mathematics where relevant.
  • Apply for scholarships alongside admission, and note intake dates, including Spring 2027 deadlines where applicable.

Bottom line

Pure science in the UAE is a smaller, quieter choice than business or engineering, but it offers research access, close faculty contact and, at some institutions, serious funding. It works best for students who are curious, comfortable with mathematics and willing to add skills or further study to shape their career. Shortlist three to five programmes, compare laboratories, research opportunities and funding, and speak to admissions and the department before you decide.
